Meet The Doctors

Brian K. Griffith, MD

Ophthalmologist- Board Certified

Dr. Griffith earned his Bachelor of Arts from Washington and Jefferson College in Pennsylvania, and his Medical Degree from West Virginia University in 1999.

Dr. Griffith’s training includes having completed an internship with Charleston Area Medical Center in Internal Medicine, which was followed by an ophthalmic surgery residency at the West Virginia Eye Institute in 2003. He practices comprehensive ophthalmology at Mountain State Eye Associates.

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is board certified.

Dr. Griffith’s specialty is comprehensive Ophthalmology with a focus on cataract surgery, glaucoma laser and surgical procedures, pediatric exams and strabismus surgery and minor eyelid surgery.

He currently serves as a clinical assistant professor at the West Virginia University School of Medicine, and is an active member of the West Virginia Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, Kanawha Ophthalmic Society and Kanawha Medical Society.

A native of West Virginia, Doctor Griffith currently resides in Charleston with his wife and daughter. He enjoys spending his free time fly fishing, playing basketball and traveling.

Charity V. Hix, MD

Ophthalmologist-Board Certified

Originally from Iowa, Dr. Hix earned her medical degree from the University of Iowa College of Medicine. She completed her internship at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa and then completed her ophthalmic training at the West Virginia University Eye Institute.

She enjoys caring for patients of all ages and providing medical and surgical care for a variety of ophthalmic conditions, including cataract, glaucoma, strabismus and eyelid disease.

Dr. Hix is an active member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.  In addition, she is the past president of the West Virginia Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. 

Dr. Hix resides in Charleston, WV. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, gardening, and reading.

Marlene B. Mowery, MS, OD


Dr. Mowery graduated from West Virginia University with an undergraduate degree in mathematics and physics. She has a Masters of Science degree in Human Biophysics and Physiology with a focus in thyroid disease. Her Doctor of Optometry degree was obtained from Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she graduated with Honors.

Since her graduation, she has been in private practice, most recently with Mountain State Eye Associates. She is the founder and president of Mobile Vision, Inc., which provides eye care to nursing home residents.

Her specialized professional interests include pediatric and geriatric eye care, as well as specialty contact lenses, such as bifocal and keratoconus.
